Halloween Sensory and Edible Recipes

Before embarking on any of the following Halloween-themed sensory or edible activities,

educators must exercise caution ensure the safety and well-being of all children participating.


Relevant Frameworks and Standards:

‣ EYLF (Early Years Learning Framework) Outcomes: These activities can contribute to outcomes 3 (Wellbeing) and 5 (Communication) by promoting fine motor skills and expressive language.

‣ VEYLDF (Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework) Outcomes: Alignment with Outcome 3 (Wellbeing) and Outcome 4 (Learning).

‣ MTOP (My Time, Our Place) Framework: These activities resonate with Outcome 2 (Community) by fostering social interactions, and Outcome 4 (Confident and Involved Learners) by encouraging curiosity and problem-solving.

‣ QKLG (Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline): Activities support aspects of ‘Exploring and connecting with my world’ by promoting sensory experiences, and ‘Showing confidence and involvement in learning’ by providing hands-on exploration.

‣ National Quality Standards: These activities fall under Quality Area 1 (Educational Program and Practice), Quality Area 2 (Children’s Health and Safety), and Quality Area 5 (Relationships with Children).



Spooky Slime

Ingredients:

1 cup of cornflour (cornstarch)

1/2 cup of water

Food colouring (orange, purple, or green for a Halloween theme)

A few drops of lavender or chamomile essential oil (optional, for a calming sensory experience)

Small Halloween toys like plastic spiders or googly eyes (optional)

Instructions:

Measure and Pour: Measure the cornflour and pour it into the mixing bowl.

Add Colour: Add a few drops of your chosen food colouring to 1/2 cup of water and mix well.

Combine: Slowly add the coloured water to the cornflour while stirring.

Stir to Consistency: Stir the mixture until you achieve a slime-like consistency. If it’s too runny, add a bit more cornflour; if it’s too thick, add a small amount of water.

Optional Scent: Add a few drops of lavender or chamomile essential oil for a calming effect. Mix well.

Add Halloween Toys: If you’d like, you can now add small Halloween-themed toys like plastic spiders or googly eyes into the slime. Make sure these are age-appropriate.

Play and Store: Let the children explore and play with the slime! When not in use, store it in an airtight container to keep it fresh.


Witch’s Brew


Ingredients:

Cooked spaghetti (about 2-3 cups)

Food colouring (green for a witchy potion effect)

1 tablespoon of vegetable oil (to prevent sticking)

Halloween toys like plastic eyeballs, spiders, or foam shapes (optional)

Small plastic cauldrons or bowls for serving

Large mixing bowl for preparation

Instructions:

Cook Spaghetti: Cook the spaghetti as per the package instructions until it’s al dente. Drain and let it cool down.

Colour the Spaghetti: Place the cooked, cooled spaghetti into a zip-lock bag. Add a few drops of green food colouring and the vegetable oil.

Mix: Seal the zip-lock bag and shake it well until all the spaghetti strands are uniformly coloured.

Optional Add-Ins: Open the zip-lock bag and add in any Halloween toys like plastic eyeballs or spiders. Seal the bag and shake it again to distribute the toys.

Transfer to Cauldrons: Once the spaghetti is well-coated with colour and the toys are evenly distributed, transfer the mixture to small plastic cauldrons or bowls.

Ready to Play: Set these cauldrons out for children to explore. They can use their hands or spoons to stir the “Witch’s Brew,” find the hidden toys, and enjoy the squishy, slippery texture.


Monster Rice Shake

Ingredients:

1 cup of rice

Food colouring (purple, green)

Small plastic bottles with lids

Googly eyes or small monster stickers (optional)

Instructions:

Dye the rice with food colouring and let it dry.

Fill the plastic bottles halfway with the coloured rice.

Add googly eyes or stickers to the bottles.

Seal and shake to make a monster rice shaker!



Ghostly Cloud Dough

Ingredients:

4 cups of plain flour

1 cup of baby oil

Small plastic ghosts

Instructions:

Mix flour and baby oil together to form cloud dough.

Add plastic ghosts.

Let children explore the dough, finding the hidden ghosts.


Bat Cave Jelly


Ingredients:

Blackcurrant jelly cubes

Plastic bats

Large bowl

Instructions:

Prepare the jelly as per instructions but make it a bit firmer by using less water.

Add plastic bats and let it set.

Once set, children can explore the ‘bat cave.’



Eerie Eyeball Soup

Ingredients:

Water beads (safety)

Toy eyeballs

Water

Large tub

Instructions:

Hydrate the water beads as per package instructions.

Add toy eyeballs and water.

Children can use spoons or hands to fish out the eyeballs.


Zombie Guts


Ingredients:

Cooked spaghetti

Red food colouring

Large bowl

Instructions:

Dye the spaghetti with red food colouring.

Place in a large bowl and let children explore the ‘zombie guts’.



Spider Web Hunt

Ingredients:

White yarn

Plastic spiders

Small box

Instructions:

Wind the yarn inside the box to create a web.

Hide spiders in the web.

Children pull the yarn to find the spiders.


Glowing Ghost Foam


Ingredients:

2 cups of water

1/2 cup of dish soap

Glow in the dark paint

Blender

Instructions:

Blend all ingredients to make foam.

Place foam in a dark room or under a blacklight to glow.



Pumpkin Spice Oobleck

Ingredients:

1 cup cornflour

1/2 cup water

Pumpkin spice seasoning

Orange food colouring

Instructions:

Mix all ingredients to make oobleck.

Let children explore the consistency.
